Reflection on Aimee Mullins Adversity TED Talk
When Aimee Mullins read off the two definitions of the word disability from the thesaurus, I was shocked and upset by these terms used to describe this word. Each of these words that are supposedly synonymous with the word disability were more or less degrading in my opinion. She made a completely valid and astute point when she emphasized how adversity should leave a mark on a person because this is what shapes us, and ultimately allows us to grow and change. Preparing ourselves to face adverse situations is more important that trying to completely avoid them because these situations are important and transformative parts of our lives. This is where treating the wholeness of the person becomes very important. By looking at the whole person, we are better able to find the opportunities that are wrapped up in life's adverse situations.
